Types of Body Piercing Jewelry Based on Functional Characteristics

Someone once said there can be as many types of jewelry as there are people. Diversity is one of the foundations of the body piercing culture.

If we want to understand the possibilities that body jewelry offers, a classification is very useful. From a functional point of view, we can group body jewelry into six major categories:

Without accessories

There are rings without balls and with fixed balls that must be gently flexed sideways to be placed (seamless, g-ring, etc.) There are also pieces that have a more complex shape, allowing them to stay in place without needing to be flexed or closed in any way (nostril retainers, etc.), or jewelry with stoppers that stay in place due to a larger diameter at the ends (plugs, tunnels, etc.)

With Pressure Accessories

There are also rings with accessories held by pressure at two points, which have a notch to help keep the piece in place.

These accessories can be balls with a hole through their center or even accessories of different shapes with crystals, opals, etc.

The pressure the ring exerts on the accessory is calibrated using opening and closing pliers, allowing them to be placed and removed laterally with just the fingers.

Jewelry can also be held in place with hypoallergenic silicone supports (o-rings) which keep the pieces secure (retainers, plugs, etc.).

With Screw-On Accessories

Whether curved, circular, or straight bars, all have a thread that tightens to the right and loosens to the left. These threads can be on the ends of the bars or on the accessories, being external and internal threads respectively.

With Pin and Pin-Push Accessories

Both are pressure systems, using a threadless cord that stays fixed in its bar through a flexion that achieves excellent fixation when the bar end is inserted into the piercing.

Dermal anchors and microimplants

These pieces are designed to anchor in the dermis (the middle layer of the skin) while keeping their beautiful accessories on the external surface.

With Hinges / Clickers

These pieces are created to facilitate jewelry changes for users. They are practical and easy to handle, in addition to their variety of designs. They are the favorites for hard-to-access piercings like septums.

There are other ways to classify body jewelry and piercings that we will share with you in future articles. What other classifications do you know?
